How to Travel from Bucharest to Tulcea for a Danube Delta Tour

A practical guide to reaching the Danube Delta gateway — distances, transport options, timing, and what to expect on the journey.

Tulcea is the gateway city to the Danube Delta and the departure point for all Ibis Tours delta programmes. Most international visitors arrive via Bucharest, Romania's main international airport. The journey from Bucharest to Tulcea is straightforward, and with a little planning you can arrive relaxed and ready for your wildlife cruise.

Getting There

Transport Options: Bucharest to Tulcea

🚗 Private Transfer (Recommended)

Approximately 300 km, around 4 hours by road. Ibis Tours can arrange private transfers from Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport (OTP) directly to Tulcea or to the floating hotel at Tulcea Port.

This is the most convenient option — door to door, no navigating unfamiliar public transport, and the driver can make a birding or rest stop in the Dobrogea steppe en route if you wish.

🚙 Self-Drive / Rental Car

The drive is straightforward: A2 motorway east from Bucharest towards Constanța, then E87 north to Tulcea. Roads are good. The Dobrogea section passes through open steppe — look for Rollers, Bee-eaters and raptors from the roadside.

Parking in Tulcea is available near the port. A car gives you flexibility but is not needed during the cruise itself.

🚌 Bus / Minibus

Regular minibus services run between Bucharest and Tulcea. Journey times vary but are typically 4–5 hours. Services depart from Bucharest's bus stations. This is a budget option but less comfortable and less flexible than a private transfer, particularly with luggage and optics equipment.

🚂 Train

Train connections exist but are generally indirect and slower than road travel. Most routes require a change. For most international visitors, road transfer is more practical. Check CFR (Romanian Railways) for current schedules if you prefer rail travel.

The Route

What to Expect on the Drive

The Bucharest–Tulcea drive crosses three distinct landscapes. The first section follows the A2 motorway through the Wallachian plain — flat agricultural land, fast driving. After passing Constanța (or taking the bypass), the E87 turns north into the Dobrogea region.

Dobrogea — A Birding Landscape

The Dobrogea steppe is one of Romania's most distinctive landscapes — Europe's westernmost Asian steppe, with rolling grassland, ancient Măcin Mountains, and scattered rocky outcrops. Even from the car, you may spot Roller, Bee-eater, Long-legged Buzzard, Calandra Lark and Red-backed Shrike. If your schedule allows, a stop at one of the roadside vantage points can add steppe species to your trip list before you even reach the delta.

Arriving in Tulcea

Tulcea sits at the point where the Danube divides into its three main branches. The floating hotel is moored at Tulcea Port, easily accessible from the main road. If you arrive in time, an evening stroll along the Danube promenade often produces Common Tern, Yellow-legged Gull, and occasionally White-tailed Eagle soaring over the river.

⏱️ Timing Tip

If your flight lands at Bucharest before midday, a same-day transfer to Tulcea is comfortable — you'll arrive by late afternoon with time to settle in before the cruise starts the next morning. If you arrive in the afternoon or evening, consider an overnight in Bucharest and transferring to Tulcea the following morning.

Alternative Route

Via Constanța

If you are already on the Black Sea coast, Tulcea is approximately 120 km north of Constanța — around 2–2.5 hours by road via the E87. This route passes through the northern Dobrogea steppe and is particularly scenic. Some guests combine a night in Constanța's old town with the drive to Tulcea the following day.
