Why Birdwatch in the Danube Delta?

The Danube Delta is one of Europe's most spectacular birdwatching destinations — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where over 300 species have been recorded and 180 breed annually. The scale of the pelican, cormorant and heron colonies is unlike anywhere else on the continent.

What makes the Delta unique for birdwatching is access. Ibis Tours' 4-star floating hotel takes you deep into the reserve overnight — so you're on the water at dawn and dusk when birds are most active, not commuting from a hotel in Tulcea. This insider access changes the experience entirely.

Seasonal Birdwatching Guide — Danube Delta

🌸 Spring (Apr–Jun)

Peak season. Pelicans breeding and displaying, spring migration at its height, maximum species diversity. Breeding plumage makes identification easiest. Best for first-timers.

☀️ Summer (Jul–Aug)

Excellent for pelican and cormorant concentrations. Warm weather, long days. Young birds fledging. Busier with other visitors in main channels — but remote lakes remain quiet.

🍂 Autumn (Sep–Oct)

Spectacular migration — raptors, waders and wildfowl moving through in large numbers. Cooler temperatures ideal for walking. Fewer tourists. Best for photographers.

❄️ Winter (Nov–Mar)

Dramatic and atmospheric. White-tailed Eagles, Rough-legged Buzzards, and large wildfowl flocks. The Delta in winter ice is visually stunning. Specialist interest.
