Detailed Seasonal Guide
🌱 April — Early Spring: Migration & Arrival
April marks the start of the main birdwatching season. Summer breeders begin arriving — Squacco Heron, Night Heron, Glossy Ibis, Little Egret, and the first warblers. Raptor migration brings Marsh Harrier, Red-footed Falcon, and occasionally Honey Buzzard and Lesser Spotted Eagle overhead. The delta is greening rapidly. Water levels are typically high, opening up channels that may be too shallow later in summer. White-tailed Eagle, resident year-round, is already active at nest sites.
April can be cool, especially in the mornings — layered clothing is advisable. Days are lengthening quickly. Species counts are building but have not yet peaked.
Key targets: Red-footed Falcon, Squacco Heron, Glossy Ibis, Pygmy Cormorant, White-tailed Eagle
🌿 May — Late Spring: The Peak Month
May is widely regarded as the single best month for Danube Delta birdwatching. Migration is still under way while breeding colonies are forming and becoming active. Species diversity peaks — it is not unusual to record 130–160 species in a week aboard the floating hotel. Great White Pelican and Dalmatian Pelican colonies are building. Whiskered Tern, Common Tern, and Black Tern arrive. Warblers — Great Reed, Savi's, Paddyfield — are in full song in the reedbeds. Bee-eaters and Rollers appear on exposed perches.
Weather is warm and settled. Long days allow birding from before 06:00 until after 20:00. This is the month most dedicated birders choose.
Key targets: Dalmatian Pelican, Paddyfield Warbler, Bee-eater, Roller, Ferruginous Duck
☀️ June — Early Summer: Peak Breeding
Breeding activity reaches its height. Pelican colonies are at their most spectacular, with adults flying sorties to feed chicks. Heron and egret colonies (Squacco, Night, Grey, Purple, Great White, Little Egret) are noisy and visible. Whiskered Tern colonies carpet the water lilies. Photography conditions are outstanding — warm light, calm water, and active birds.
Temperatures are higher but not yet at midsummer peak. Mosquitoes become more active — insect repellent and light long sleeves are recommended. The floating hotel's screened observation deck is a practical advantage in this period.
Key targets: Great White Pelican (breeding), Whiskered Tern, Purple Heron, Glossy Ibis, Kingfisher
🌞 July–August — High Summer: Concentrations & Fledglings
Summer is characterised by high waterbird concentrations and the appearance of fledglings — young pelicans, herons and cormorants learning to fish. Water lily meadows reach peak bloom, creating one of the delta's most photogenic landscapes. Early wader passage begins in August, with Spotted Redshank, Wood Sandpiper, and Curlew Sandpiper appearing on mudflats.
Temperatures can be high (30–35°C). Early morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable and productive birding periods. The floating hotel's air-conditioned cabins provide welcome midday respite.
Key targets: Pelican fledglings, Marsh Harrier, passage waders, Pygmy Cormorant, water lily landscapes
🍂 September–October — Autumn: Migration & Geese
Autumn brings a different kind of spectacle. Large raptor movements — Marsh Harrier, Honey Buzzard, Lesser Spotted Eagle — pass through the delta and over the Dobrogea steppe. Passerine migrants move through in waves. By late September, the first geese arrive — Red-breasted Goose (globally vulnerable), White-fronted Goose, and Greylag Goose build to large flocks on the Razim–Sinoe lagoon complex.
Great White Pelicans begin their departure by mid-October. The delta takes on golden autumn colours. Channels are quieter. Temperatures are pleasant — ideal for walking and photography. This is an excellent season for birders who prefer fewer crowds and a contemplative atmosphere.
Key targets: Red-breasted Goose, migrating raptors, White-tailed Eagle, passage passerines

May is widely considered the best single month. Migration is still active, breeding colonies are forming, species diversity peaks, the weather is warm, and days are long. It is the month most dedicated birders choose.
Great White Pelicans are present from approximately April to October. They are most concentrated at breeding colonies in May–June, but large flocks remain visible through September. By mid-October most have departed for wintering grounds.
Winter birding is limited but rewarding for specialists. Red-breasted Goose (globally vulnerable) winters on the Razim–Sinoe lagoons, alongside other wildfowl. White-tailed Eagle is resident year-round. However, floating hotel cruises operate April to October only.
Spring is best for migration and colony formation. Summer is peak breeding with fledglings. Late summer brings wader passage. Autumn features raptor migration and arriving geese. Each period has a distinct species mix.
