Danube Delta Birdwatching Tours
Expert-led birding holidays in Europe's largest wetland. Live aboard a floating hotel, explore remote channels at dawn, and encounter pelicans, eagles, herons and hundreds of migrant species with naturalist guides.
The Danube Delta is Europe's second-largest river delta and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve spanning over 5,000 km² of channels, lakes, reed-beds and flooded forest. It is one of the continent's most important wetlands for breeding, wintering and passage waterbirds — supporting over 360 recorded bird species and the largest colonies of Great White Pelican and Dalmatian Pelican in the EU. Ibis Tours has operated specialist birdwatching tours here since 1995, using its own 4-star floating hotel to reach the most productive habitats deep in the reserve.
Why the Danube Delta for Birdwatching
What Makes an Ibis Tours Birdwatching Holiday Different
Our birdwatching tours are not sightseeing trips with a few bird stops. Every element — route, timing, vessel, guide — is designed for serious wildlife access in a comfortable, small-group setting.
Own Floating Hotel
Ibis Tours owns and operates its 4-star floating hotel — the only live-aboard birdwatching vessel in the delta. You stay in the heart of the reserve, with dawn access to remote channels that day-trip boats cannot reach.
Naturalist Guides
Our field guides are experienced ornithologists with deep local knowledge. They know the pelican colonies, eagle territories, heron roosts and tern breeding sites — and how to reach them at the right time of day.
Small Groups
Group sizes are kept small to ensure quality observation, minimal disturbance to wildlife, and flexibility to follow sightings. Every guest gets meaningful time with the guide.
Dawn & Dusk Access
Living aboard the floating hotel means you are already in the delta at first light and last light — the two most productive periods for waterbird activity, when shore-based visitors are still in transit.
ARBDD Permits
Ibis Tours holds full permits from the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority (ARBDD) to access strictly protected zones, including core pelican and cormorant breeding areas during the nesting season.
Full Board & Comfort
All meals are included — freshly prepared on board with local ingredients, including Danube fish specialities. Double cabins with en-suite facilities. No camping, no roughing it.
Our Birdwatching Tours Suit a Range of Interests
Dedicated Birdwatchers & Listers
The delta delivers key European targets efficiently — Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Glossy Ibis, Ferruginous Duck, Whiskered Tern, Paddyfield Warbler, and more. The floating hotel's deep-delta positioning maximises species count. Our guides help with identification, habitat context and finding scarce species.
Nature Lovers & Wildlife Enthusiasts
You don't need to be an expert birder. The Danube Delta is spectacularly rich in wildlife of all kinds — from mink and otters to dragonflies and wild orchids. The experience of gliding through silent channels with pelicans overhead is unforgettable regardless of your birding background.

The Danube Delta supports over 360 bird species. Key targets include Great White Pelican, Dalmatian Pelican (globally near-threatened), Pygmy Cormorant, White-tailed Eagle, Glossy Ibis, eight species of heron and egret, Ferruginous Duck, Whiskered Tern, and a wide range of passage migrants. Breeding colonies are spectacular in May–June.
April to June is optimal — breeding colonies are active, spring migration brings warblers and raptors, and species diversity peaks. July and August offer excellent waterbird concentrations. September to October features autumn migration. The delta rewards birdwatchers from March through November.
A floating hotel is a live-aboard vessel that stays in the heart of the delta throughout the tour. Ibis Tours operates its own 4-star floating hotel with 10 double cabins, a panoramic lounge, observation deck, and full board. This allows dawn and dusk access to remote channels where day-trip boats cannot reach.
No prior experience is needed. Our guides cater for beginners through to serious listers. Binoculars and field guides are provided for guests who do not have their own. The floating hotel's observation deck and slow-paced boat excursions make birdwatching accessible for everyone.
