Species the 5-Day Adds

The extra day primarily unlocks the Dobrogea plateau habitat — a semi-arid steppe landscape that supports species unavailable in the delta wetlands. This is genuinely different habitat: open farmland, rocky outcrops, and sandy banks with nesting colonies.

Collared PratincoleNesting on the Dobrogea steppe. Aerial, tern-like flight. 60% reliability on 4-day; near-guaranteed on 5-day.
Red-footed FalconMigrant through Dobrogea in May. Groups of 5–20 on wires. Very occasionally on 4-day.
Lesser KestrelColonial nester in Dobrogea villages and cliffs. Not accessible from the delta water.
Short-toed EagleBreeding raptor over the plateau. Occasional on 4-day; regular on 5-day.
Black-headed BuntingCommon in scrubby steppe habitat; virtually absent from delta channels.
European Roller (more)Second Letea visit increases photographic opportunities significantly.

In May, the total species differential is typically 20–35 species: 100–130 on the 4-day versus 130–160 on the 5-day. For birders with specific target lists, the Dobrogea day often adds 6–10 new species in a single afternoon.

Who Should Choose Each Programme

Choose the 4-Day if you:

  • Are visiting the Danube Delta for the first time
  • Have limited time or budget
  • Are combining with bear watching (arrive back earlier)
  • Are primarily interested in waterbirds and pelicans
  • Are travelling with non-birding companions
  • Want to test whether live-aboard birdwatching suits you

Choose the 5-Day if you:

  • Are a dedicated birder with a target species list
  • Want Collared Pratincole, Red-footed Falcon, or Lesser Kestrel
  • Are a wildlife photographer wanting repeated sessions
  • Have already done the 4-day and want more
  • Are visiting in September (more time = more species in quiet season)
  • Want the most comprehensive Dobrogea + delta combination

Combining with Bear Watching

The most popular extended itinerary pairs the 4-day delta cruise with a 2-night Carpathian bear watching programme near Braşov. The complete combination (6–7 days including travel) gives you:

  • Dalmatian Pelican colonies at close range in the UNESCO core zones
  • 100–130 species in the delta
  • Brown bear at a baited hide in the Carpathian forest (85%+ sighting rate)
  • European Wolf and Lynx as possible bonuses
